Learning the work

I grew up with construction plans spread across our family's dining room table. My stepdad, Tom Trainor, was my mentor and one of the greatest influences on my life. In 2001, I had the opportunity to build my first house alongside him. It was one of many opportunities to learn from his experience, from carpentry and finish work to concrete and the fundamentals of residential construction. He continued sharing what he knew throughout the years we worked together.

I began as an apprentice carpenter and went on to work as a carpenter, foreman, office manager, superintendent, and project manager. That progression gave me a perspective on construction that extends beyond the drawings and finished product. I understand the work in the field, the coordination behind the scenes, and the value of lasting relationships with the people who make it all happen.

Leadership & stewardship

My years in the fire service gave me another perspective on leadership and safety. I learned to manage competing priorities, stay focused under pressure, and distinguish between situations that demand immediate action and those better served by a measured response.

Today, I lead Manzanita Building Group with a focus on architectural vision, personal service, and responsible project stewardship. I work closely with homeowners, architects, and designers to honor each project's design intent, bring together the right expertise, and maintain clear expectations for budget, schedule, and execution.

People & principles

Beyond construction, I enjoy playing bass at church and recreational softball. I've also been accepted into the Redwood Empire Remodelers Association, an opportunity to connect with peers who value quality work, professionalism, and shared learning.

Above all, I carry forward what Tom demonstrated throughout his career: treat people fairly, take responsibility, and stand behind your work. A good reputation isn't something you declare. It's something you earn through consistency, one relationship and one project at a time.

Whole House Renovation & Addition

6 Months

This St. Helena home began with original character and a long list of things that needed attention. The work included structural corrections, a rebuilt interior, major systems, windows and doors, cabinetry and finishes, and a reworked exterior and landscape.

The objective was to preserve what made the house special while making everything else work the way it should.

Structural Renovation & Addition Framing

Manzanita Scope: 3 Months

Manzanita completed the structural framing scope for a residential renovation and addition, including extensive wood and steel framing, roof framing modifications, structural connections, and custom decorative metal rafter ties. The work involved coordination with the structural engineer and owner, integrating the new structural elements into the existing residence.

Exterior Renovation & Addition

8 to 10 Months (in progress)

The Dry Creek scope brings an addition together with an extensive exterior renovation: removing water- and dry-rot-damaged material and renewing sheathing, waterproofing and siding where the exterior had been opened to the framing.

The construction behind the exterior is as much a part of the project as the finished surface.

Olive Street Residence

Bathroom Remodel & Residential Rehabilitation

3 Weeks

This residential rehabilitation included a bathroom remodel, new roofing, skylight installation, attic repairs, and insulation replacement. The work was coordinated and completed on an expedited schedule.
